Saturday Crafters - Saturday December 17th

Remember! This Saturday Crafters will be our pot luck lunch, so bring your favourite dish to share for the holidays!

Hope to see you on December 17th!

Saturday Crafters Notions

Words of wisdom from: #suzyquilts

My fellow creatives,

You are called to make.
That is the deep yearning inside you.

It will not go away. Not ever.
Tell the self-doubt to shut up.
Close the door.
Put down the phone.
Turn off the TV.
Make. Create. Conceive.

This will help your family.
This will help your spirit and your strength.
This will help the world.
Respond to the call to forge something
from nothing.
Tell your story through creation.
You are needed in this way.
You are needed. Simply make.

Interested in making a Simple Zipper Bag?

This will make a great little Christmas gift for someone you love! If you are interested in making one at the December Saturday Crafters please email me to let me know.  I will walk through the steps with you.  I have only made one, and have made some adjustments already and see that more adjustments can be made as I make another with you.  The cutting instructions attached in the email I sent, for the large bag, are pretty much correct and any further sewing adjustments can be made with those measurements as we make the bag together in December.  Please watch the video in the link below to see how it goes together.

Yarn Bomb in October

Welcome to our refreshed blog page!  I was looking to give this page a crafty and cozy feeling, so you feel at home as you are reading our newest post - maybe with a cup of tea :).

You'll notice a few added features to our page - on the right hand side:

  • Upcoming Saturday Crafters Dates
  • Creative Inspiration Blogs and Creative Inspiration Videos These links are great for beginners and seasoned crafters.
  • Canadian Quilters Association's Big Quilt Bee for Ronald McDonald House - the CQA wants to make 1,000 quilts for Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada in celebration of Canada's 150th Birthday next year and you can help!  You can find the pattern for the slab block that everyone is making in the link to contribute.
  • Crafty Podcasts - What is a podcast?  It's like a radio show and these ones are all about what we love - crafting!  There are so many out there in internet land and these are some of my favourites.  The best time I find to listen to these podcasts are while running, vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom - I actually look forward to these activities now because I love being able to listen to my podcasts!  Just download a podcast app onto your Smartphone or Apple device and you too can look forward to doing chores around the house!

As was mentioned in an earlier post, this year we will be focusing on our Saturday Crafters day and making this day the Best Day of the Month!  Read our Saturday Crafters Notions below.

One more new thing we are going to try - we are going to be highlighting creative activities, workshops and sales going on in and around Essex County under Creative Happenings.  There are many local shops selling local artists creations, local galleries displaying local art work and local crafty businesses that hold creative workshops.  We are going to let you know what is going on creatively in Essex County, all in one spot, so that you can get out and either be creative or buy creative!  Support these local businesses!

NEXT SATURDAY CRAFTERS IS NOVEMBER 19TH

Saturday Crafters Notions
Saturday Crafters is your comfy, cozy crafting community!  We are simply crafters who like to get together with other "makers" to work on our creative projects.

There's something about being together with others who like making that creates a warm and supportive environment that inspires you and encourages your creative ideas.

We enjoy Saturday Crafters so much, we want others to come out and enjoy this carefree time with us too!  We talk about everything crafty and not-so crafty.  We share finished, not-so finished and gone wrong projects.  We get advice on techniques and sometimes life in general.  We learn new things and make new friends - friends who will support you and all your crazy crafting ideas!

No project is too big or too small to work on at Saturday Crafters.  We are not professional crafters - we are always learning and excited to learn more!

Here are just some of the crafts people have been doing at Saturday Crafters:
  • quilting
  • knitting
  • looming
  • painting
  • adult colouring
  • weaving
  • gelli printing
  • scrapbooking
  • sewing
  • chit-chatting and drinking tea :) (that can be creative too!)

J.

Last Saturday Crafters Teresa was making awesome progress on her very first quilt!  Barb was out painting up a storm in preparation for a showing at the Nancy John Art Gallery in Windsor. Pam was enjoying another relaxing day of colouring and we had lots of other sewing and knitting going on!

Schedule Change for September Saturday Crafters

We will not be having our regularly scheduled Saturday Crafters in September due to “vacation scheduling” conflicts.
With that being said, our first Saturday Crafters back will be on October 1st !
Why are we having a Saturday Crafters on October 1st you ask?  Because that weekend is Culture Days Weekend!
Culture Days is a Canada wide event that promotes and encourages Canadians to get involved in arts, crafts and culture in their neighbourhoods.  Saturday Crafters on October 1st will be FREE of charge for all who attend and we are hoping to have a crafty demo or two as well.  Stay tuned for details.

Upcoming Saturday Crafters Dates 2016-2017 – Mark your calendars!
October 1           November 19
December 17    January 21         February 18
March 18             April 15                May 20

Yes Another Yarn Bombing!

Also for Culture Days, on Friday September 30th , we will do another yarn bombing!  This year our creative yarn display will be on the fence at the Essex Retirees.  This is our starting point so far, but hopefully we can expand up Centre Street as well.
We are planning on doing a yarn “scene” with branches, leaves, maybe rocks, pumpkins, birds and a person or two!  We’re going to get creative with this one!  At least 75% of the knitted and crocheted pieces will be stitched together into scarves, hats, blankets and mittens for local charities after the display is taken down.

As of right now, here are some starting guidelines of sizes of knitted and crocheted pieces we would be looking for:
§  granny squares 5”-7” square
§  scarves with a length of 75” x 5”-7” wide, brown for branches
§  flowers, leaves, animals

These sizes can be bigger or smaller, whatever you are comfortable making.  Pieces can be folded and/or bent for shaping.  Get creative and picture your little part of the scene!

Remember, if you donate parts and pieces to the yarn bombing, please be willing to stitch them together into scraves and blankets, after it is taken down, to be donated.

Please keep in touch with us if you plan on knitting or crocheting for the yarn bombing – let us know what you are making and we will keep track of what to expect. Email us at artspaceessex@gmail.com
